During a tasting session with the village dignitaries, shoemaker Van De Wouwer exclaimed, intensely surprised by the powerful aromas of the beer: "This is a real Duvel." A divine inspiration? From 1923 onwards, the beer was marketed under this name, which was not self-evident in the Catholic Flanders of that time.
