The story behind Gentse Strop goes back to the time of Emperor Charles V and the infamous Ghent 'slings bearers'. When the people of Ghent refused to pay extra war taxes, Charles V had them go around the city with a cord around their necks, as a sign that they deserved the gallows. The proud people of Ghent did not let themselves be fooled and refused to bow to the tyranny of Charles V. The noose thus became the symbol of their resistance. Proud, stubborn and full of character.
